Homestead of James Yeager and Nancy Hayden

The old homestead of James and Nancy (Hayden) Yeager in Illinois. James and Nancy were the parents of Leatha Ann Yeager (mother of Lucy A. Pope).

The old house on the left (between the trees) was the first house they lived in when they settled in Illinois in 1835. They moved to Missouri in 1842, stayed one year and returned to Illinois in 1843. They later moved to the house farther down the road, (to the house on the right in this picture, between the trees.) Both houses they lived in are show from a distance in this photo. The building in the middle, with the tin roof, is an old barn. The homestead is located about two miles southwest of La Harpe, Illinois.

From La Harpe, Illinois going west on highway 94, just outside of town take Fountain Green (blacktop) Road south. After you cross the railroad tracks go 1.5 miles. The old homestead is on your left at the intersection of the road from the left and the blacktop road you're on.

I am sorry that I did not get a better photo of the area when I was there. The weeds around the old house were tall and the other house still has people living there. I did not wish to disturb them. I took this picture in August, 2003.

James and Nancy are buried about 10 miles north of the homestead in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Terre Haute, Illinois. There is a photo of their headstone on this page (Headstone)

Other family members, the father of James Yeager, Nicholas Yeager, and members of the Cambron family are buried in the old Lincoln Cemetery that is a few miles south of this old homestead. We who are descendants of Lucy A. Pope are also descendants of these Cambrons who date back in the 1700s. These Cambrons are the ancestors of Thomas Cambron Pope the father of Lucy A. Pope (Ulmer), wife of Thomas Ulmer. At this time I'm not sure if our older Pope ancestors are at the old cemetery. It is not taken care of and much lost to weeds and brush now. An aunt and some cousins of President Abraham Lincoln are also buried in this cemetery.
