John Kilfoy & Rose Ann Boylen

John Edward Kilfoy was born in Ireland, abt. 1818. He came through New York, then lived in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario (Canada), then he moved to Ohio, then to Missouri. The 1861 census shows he had the following children at that time; Patrick, age 7, James Edward, age 5, Mary, age 3, and Rose Ann, age 1.

The 1861 census also shows that, Mary was 3 years old and born in New York. Because of that census, I am assuming that John lived in or came through New York about 1857 or 1858.

The census of 1861 from Kingston Township list him as being 37 at that time, (meaning he’d have been born in 1824, not 1818). But a different census of 1880, from Wright County, Mo., list him as 62 at that time. I do believe the birth date of 1818, to be correct.

John was the son of Dennis and Margaret Kilfoy of Limerick, Ireland. I have no other information on his parents at this time.

Rose Ann Boylen was born in Ireland, abt. 1829/30. She married John Edward Kilfoy abt.1853. The children the couple had are listed in the paragraph above under John’s listing.

John and Rose had a fifth child; Catherine, born, Sept 25, 1862, in Kingston Township.

John and Rose Ann Kilfoy were the parents of  Mary Kilfoy, the mother of Rosa Ann Gregory.

Information on Mary Kilfoy is listed on page 5, click here  (There is also a photo of Mary on the page.)

John Butcher and Anna Keiffer

John Butcher was born in Ohio in 1844. John's father's name may have been Basil Butcher. His father's name has yet to be documented, however there is some evidence to this found within records pertaining to John's military service.
John married Hannah (aka. "Anna") Keiffer on Sept. 17, 1865. They had two sons, William and Aaron ( I believe, although he went by Aaron, his full name was Earnest Aaron Butcher). Anna died, (sometime before Samuel Butcher was born in 1874) and John later married Arvelda Henderson. John fathered seven more children with Arvelda. They were: Samuel, Thomas, Mary, Lee, John, Fred, and Minnie. (This may not be in the correct order by birth.)

Hannah Kieffer died at an early age. Little has been known about her father and/or mother's ancestral lineage. But, a great amount of research on her ancestry has been done by others; what I share here is from the research work done by others. See the reported information here.

John and Arvelda was living in Kansas City, MO. in 1880.

The 1880 census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO. list Arvelda as having  been born in Minnesota, in abt. 1856. It also list John as having been born in Ohio; which does not agree with the 1870 census. The 1870 census says he was born in Missouri.

Other problems found when reviewing the 1870 census and the 1880 census; The 1870 census says John's sons, Earnest and William, were born in Kansas, but the 1880 census indicates that they were born in Ohio. They were born in Kansas, and the 1880 census info is not correct on their location of birth. Perhaps Arvelda answered the census taker's questions on the location of Aaron's and William's birth location; Arvelda was the step-mother of Aaron and William. The same problem is found when looking at earlier census pertaining to Hannah, and some of her siblings' location of births. The 1850 census indicates births in Kentucky, at a time the family is found to have been living in Missouri. Those misunderstanding (or mistakes on the census reports) pertain to John Keefer's family, when Hannah was a child. John Keefer was Hannah's father.

William Butcher & Rosa Ann Gregory

William Butcher was born July 4th, 1869 in Lenexa Kansas. His father and mother were John Butcher and Hannah Keiffer. They (William's parents, John and Hannnah (aka. "Anna") were married Sept. 17, 1865 in Franklin County, Kansas. After Hannah died, William Butcher married Rosa Ann Gregory Mar.19, 1893 at Hartville Mo.. William died Jan. 5, 1953. At the time of his death, William lived in Bryson, Mo.. He is buried in the cemetery at Green Ridge , Mo.. He was one of nine children that his father had. His father, John Butcher, married twice and died at age 40.

William Butcher's middle name, per his death certificate, was "Walter"; But his headstone has an "M" for his middle initial. There is also one census report giving the "M" as his middle intial. His family, and his death certificate indicate that the "M" should have been a "W". It is not known why the mistake on the stone was not corrected.

William and his brother, Aaron, were the sons of Anna (or "Hannah") Keiffer. All other children of John were the children of Arvelda Henderson.

Rosa Ann Gregory was born Sept. 14, 1874 in Wright County, Mo.. She died, June 23, 1962. She was the daughter of Samuel M. Gregory and Mary Kilfoy. Rosa's mother, Mary Kilfoy Gregory, died when Rosa was only two years old. Her infant brother, Georgie, died when she was three. Mary Kilfoy, Rosa's mother, also had a sister named Ellen (aka. "Ella"), that married John Edward Connelly. John is the person who introduced William to Rosa. You can read more about this in Virginia White's essay, "Our Ancestors". After Rosa's mother died, she was raised by her grandmother Rosa Ann (Boylen) Kilfoy. You'll find more info on the Gregory family at this page here.
