Ulmer Locations in Indiana
Circa 1810 - 1815

Circa 1810 to 1815 Jacob Ulmer and his family lived in Clark County Indiana. Scott County was later formed in 1820, from Jennings, Jefferson, Washington, and Clark counties. The area they lived in after 1820 became part of Scott County. The town of Scottsburg was not founded until 1870. Although both Scott County and Scottsburg were not there until years later than 1815, I've placed them on the map below to show you where the family members lived when the area was only "wilderness territory".

The small town of Vienna, Indiana is not marked on this map, it is located about 5 miles south of Scottsburg. Also the location of Pigeon Roost, Indiana, known for the Pigeon Roost Massacre of September, 1812, is also a few miles south of Vienna. I have not marked it's location on the map as well.

An area showing the approximate area known as "Clark's Grant" (also referred to as "Illinois Grants') is shown below.

Notice #1 on the map. This is the general location of where Jacob Ulmer lived, prior to his move to Illinois around 1830.

#1 is also the area that William Harrod's family lived.
In the writings of Samuel Harrod, son of William Harrod (one of the first settlers of Clark County, Indiana), he states where the family lived. He also list many of his neighbors, Jacob Ulmer being one of them; "Jacob Ulmer, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, one-half mile east".

The above is stated on page 15 of "Pioneer Life in Scott Co., Indiana" by Carl R. Bogardus, pub. 1957.

Harrod Cemetery is also at the location of where the Harrod farm was located.
From William Harrod's cabin, the neighbors were:
1/2 mile east - Jacob Ulmer
1&1/2 mile east - Joel Cunningham
2 miles east - Parker Turlock
4 miles north - John Bridges
4 miles north - John Nolin
4 miles south - Thomas Hughbanks
1 mile west - William Pittman
1 mile south - Thomas Meranda

# 4 on the map (right in the lower part of the town of Scottsburg), is where later in the 1830s Thomas Ulmer, son of George Ulmer, b 1789, and grandson of Jacob Ulmer, b: 1758, owned 120 acres of land. Scottsburg was not founded, or there until 1870. This area was all wilderness at the time. There were other settlers there, but no town called Scottsburg.

# 3 next to Thomas's land, is where George Ulmer, b: 1789, son of Jacob Ulmer owned 40 acres. George is buried in Estil Cemetery, east of where he lived.
