Lula Caroline Bartee was the second child born to Thomas Perry Bartee and Emaline Hubbard. Lula was born in Montgomery County, Missouri in September of 1870. She is listed as being 6 years old in the Missouri, Montgomery County census for the year 1876.
Lula married Adda Joseph Highbarger on May 5, 1891 in Buffalo, Dallas County, Mo.. They were married by the "Justice of the Peace". Adda Joseph Highbarger was a younger brother to Lula Bartee's step-mother, Ruth Ann Highbarger.
Many researchers have mistaken Adda Joseph Highbarger as being "Alex" Highbarger. He is also found in records as "A. J." Highbarger. The "Alex" or "Elec" name is wide spread on the Internet because of incomplete work done by other's research work done in the past. It is also reported that he changed his name because of a comitment to the Army he did not keep. He report ably deserted.
Adda Joseph Highbarger was born March 12, 1866. In 1900 (per census records) he is reported to have been born in Missouri. However, he was born in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, the son of John A. Highbarger and Nancy Salee (Sallee). However, a later census, 1910, is correct on its listing of him as being born in Illinois.
John A. Highbarger, father of Adda Joseph, was born about 1838 in Clinton Co., Indiana. He was the son of Henry Highbarger and Nancy Williams. Nancy was born on Oct. 26, 1818 in Washington County, Indiana.
Adda Joseph Highbarger was the brother of Ruth Ann Highbarger. Ruth was the second wife of Thomas Perry Bartee. Adda also had these "half-siblings", children of his father, John A. Highbarger, and his second marriage to Mary C. (Glenn) Highbarger; James, born abt 1860; Luther, born 1871; and Maud, born in 1885.
In June of 1900, Adda and Lula Highbarger were living in Blackwater, Cooper County, Missouri. At that time, they had one child, Nora Highbarger. Nora was born in July of 1892.
In May of 1910 the couple was living in Pilot Grove Township, Cooper Co., Mo.. Mary, the couple's second child was born in April or May of 1910. She is listed as being less than one month old in the census The census was enumerated on May 11, 1910.
Adda died on July 11, 1936. Lula died on Jan. 11, 1957. She and Adda are buried in Ridge Park Cemetery of Marshall, Saline Co., Missouri.
