John William Ulmer & Elizabeth Allhands

John William Ulmer born: 1800 - 1809, in Ohio or Kentucky. John is believed to be the last child born of Jacob Ulmer, born 1758. John married Elizabeth Allhands on September 12, 1822, in Scott Co., Indiana. The marriage records have his last name spelled as "Elmore" with a question mark behind the entry. John himself, could not read or write. Census records indicate John's son, John William Ulmer Jr. could not read or write as well. This may explain the misspelling of his name in the marriage records. Other records have his name spelled as "Ulmore"; this likewise, is another way or misspelling commonly found in the spelling of the Ulmer name.

John and Elizabeth can be found in the 1820, through the 1840, Census of Indiana, however they have not been found in any Census records later than 1840. At this time we have no indication why there is no further records found of them. It is assumed that John may have died sometime after the 1840 Census, or he missed the Census of 1850, and could have died before the 1860 Census.

Elizabeth Allhands born: 1800 - 1809, in Kentucky. Elizabeth is thought to have been part of the Allhands family, who William E. Collings also married into. Rebecca H. Allhands was William E. Collings wife. It is unclear as to how Elizabeth Allhands is related to Rebecca, but because of the close ties of the Collings family, with the Ulmer Family, as well as the ties back to Nelson County, Kentucky of both the Allhands and the Collings family, there is circumstantial evidence of both these women being related to each other. Elizabeth was about 15 to 20 years older than Rebecca, but there is little indication of them being sisters, most likely they were cousins, or 2nd cousins.

John William Ulmer born: April 9, 1833 in Scott Co., Indiana. Married Elizabeth Jane Richey on June 1, 1852. Moved to Randolph Co., Arkansas around 1869 - 1870. However, one of his children is listed as being born in Arkansas as early as Sept. 18, 1868. John Jr. died Sept. 9, 1911, in Brockett, Randolph Co., Arkansas. He is buried in Gross Cemetery.

Elizabeth Jane Richey born: May 14, 1834; the daughter of William and Cynthia Ann Collings. She died February 19, 1888, in Randolph Co. Arkansas. She is buried in Gross Cemetery, Randolph Co., Arkansas.

Children of John Jr. & Elizabeth Jane (Richey) Ulmer

1. William Marion Ulmer born: Oct. 20, 1853, in Scott Co., Indiana. (The area where William was born, later in 1870, is where Scottsburg, Indiana is today.) William died June 9, 1942, and is buried in Gross Cemetery, Randolph Co., Arkansas. He married Martha Enuice Patrick (Step-daughter of Peter Reed, who married her mother, Sarah.) Martha was born June 15, 1854; she died May 15, 1926. She is buried in Cross Cemetery, Randolph Co., Arkansas.

2. Emily Catherine Ulmer born: Oct. 9, 1856, in Scott Co., Indiana. She died Jan. 10, 1905, and is buried in Overby Cemetery, Arkansas.

3. Mary Elizabeth Ulmer born: Jan. 3, 1859, in Scott Co., Indiana. She died May 25, 1909, in Randolph Co., Arkansas.

4. Margaret Ann Ulmer born: Aug. 5, 1861, in Scott Co., Indiana. She died Aug. 23, 1922, and is buried in Overby Cemetery, Arkansas.

5. Deby Jane Ulmer born: May 5, 1864, in Scott Co., Indiana. She died when only 11 months old, Jan 24, 1865.

6. Benjamin Sherman Ulmer born: Dec. 24, 1865, in Scott Co., Indiana. He died Jan. 24, 1940, in Randolph Co. Arkansas, and is buried in Johnson Cemetery, Arkansas.

7. Aaron Nelson Ulmer born: Sept. 18, 1868, in Brockett, Randolph Co., Arkansas. He died May 1, 1949, in Dallas, Texas. His second wife was Gertrude Williams.

8. Thomas Foster Ulmer born: Jan. 2, 1872, in Brockett, Randolph Co., Arkansas. He died Oct. 23, 1895.

9. Nora Josephine Ulmer born: May 12, 1875, in Brockett, Randolph Co., Arkansas. She died May 16, 1935. She is buried in Overby Cemetery, Arkansas.

10. Susan Angeline Ulmer born: April 15, 1878, in Brockett, Randolph Co., Arkansas. She died Dec. 4, 1941. She is buried in Davis Cemetery, Englandleberg, Randolph Co., Arkansas.
