The Keiffer (Keefer) Family Connection
(Pertaining to the descendants of John Butcher and Hannah Keefer/Keiffer)

There are many different spelling of the "Keiffer" name. These different spellings are also found within the records of the family that is of concern to the Ulmer family's descendants; those related to the Kieffers via the John Butcher family lineage. Some of those different spellings are: Keffer; Kieffer; Kiefer. I, myself, am not sure of the correct spelling of my ancestors last name.

Hannah Keiffer (aka. "Annie" or "Anna" Keiffer Butcher) was my gg grandmother; on my grandmother's side of the family lineage. My grandmother was born a Butcher, the daughter of William Butcher, son of John Butcher and Hannah Keiffer. Hannah is believed to have been the daughter of John Keefer (Keiffer) and Rachael LNU.

The Ancestry of Hannah Keiffer (Keefer)
(From the research work of others)

John Keifer (Keefer), born 1795 in Ohio. John's mother's name was Mary (maiden name unknown). She was born abt. 1773 in Pennsylvania. The 1850 census list her as 77 years old. John is listed as age 55, and a farmer in 1850. He is shown as living in Van Buren, Jackson Co., Missouri. His property is valued at $1,300.00. In 1850, living next door to him are the households of a David, and a William "Keefer"; both shown as age 22. These may be brothers to Hannah? However they are both indicated as being born in Missouri. They could also be brothers to John, father of Hannah.

Rachael (maiden name unknown), per the census of 1850 she was born about 1802 in Kentucky. That census also indicates that John married Rachael LNU, before 1834. This is based on the fact that there are children that were born as early as 1834, per the census. The census of 1850 is for Van Buren, Jackson Co., MO.. Although the 1840 census does not list individual's names in the household,  it is my belief that John and Rachael married before 1820. See the notes about the 1850 and 1840 census reports below.

Children of John Keefer and Rachael LNU
(per the 1850 census)

1. Solomon Keefer, born abt. 1835 in Kentucky. (The location of birth may be incorrect on the 1850 census; see notes below.)

2. Elizabeth Keefer, born abt. 1836/37 in Kentucky. (The location of birth may be incorrect on the 1850 census; see notes below.)

3. Patterson Keefer, born abt. 1842 in Kentucky. (The location of birth may be incorrect on the 1850 census; see notes below.)

4. Hannah Keefer, born abt. 1845 in Kentucky. (The location of birth may be incorrect on the 1850 census; see notes below.)

NOTES: The 1850 census also list Mary Keefer, age 77, living with John and Rachael.

Other researchers list David and William as being children of John and Rachael; however the others (the researchers) show David and William as being born in Missouri. So, if they are sons of John and Rachael, then John and Racheal would have first been in Missouri, then went to Kentucky, then back to Missouri? I question this move for John and Rachael, but, it is possible, but more likely the location of those children's birth locations are recorded wrong on the 1850 census.

This is also a possible; David and William were brothers to John, and they moved to Missouri prior to John and Rachael moving there. Because, per the 1850 census (if it is correct) all their children, born between 1835 and 1845 are indicated as being born in Kentucky. This would indicate John and Rachael lived in Kentucky for a period of time, before they moved to Missouri prior to the 1850 census being taken. (I'm still researching this.)

Per the 1840 census, John Keefer was living in Jackson, Co., Missouri, and his household had 5 more children listed than is shown in the above 1850 census report. These five children listed are most likely David, and William; an unknown named boy born between 1835 and 1840; and an unknown named son born around 1820. There is also an unnamed daughter born about 1825. This places John and Rachael in Missouri as early as 1820, It would also indicate that John and Rachael were married as early as 1820. See that census report below.

Hannah Keefer (Keiffer) is the direct ancestor to the Ulmer/Butcher lineage of this website. John Butcher and Anna Keefer were the parents of William Butcher. William (aka. "Bill") Butcher continues the Keefer (Keiffer) lineage on down within this website. John Butcher and Hannah (aka. "Anna") were married on Sept. 17, 1865 in Franklin County, Kansas.

Fine more about Hannah's descendants here.
